Kyle and Jackie O get beaten by rivals Jase & Lauren in ratings

The Kyle and Jackie O Show have been beaten in the latest radio ratings by their Melbourne rivals Nova’s Jase and Lauren who were axed by KIIS FM last year to make way for the Sydney-based hosts.

Lauren Phillips and Jason ‘Jase’ Hawkins had a huge win in the FM breakfast rankings, becoming the second most-listened to show in Melbourne.

They boosted their 8.7 per cent share to 9.6 per cent in the latest survey, knocking  FOX FM’s Fifi, Fev and Nick, who dropped from a 10 per cent share to 9.5 per cent, down to third place.

The Kyle and Jackie O show came in sixth place with a 5.9 per cent share behind smoothfm and Triple M’s Marty Sheargold Show.

GOLD FM’s Christian O’Connell still has the highest rating breakfast show in Melbourne with a 10.8 per cent share.

3AW Breakfast with Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft is the highest rating breakfast show overall in Melbourne with an 18.8 per cent share.

ARN Chief Content Officer Duncan Campbell said: ‘Despite their 25 years on air together, The Kyle & Jackie O Show is still a brand-new show for Melbourne, and we are encouraged by these early results.

‘In particular, the increase in cume [cumulative audience] demonstrates that the show is attracting new listeners and as that cume is converted to loyal listening, we’ll see share increasing.

‘We know it’ll take a few more surveys before their presence truly starts to resonate with the Melbourne audience, but we’re excited to build on this foundation and are confident that Kyle & Jackie O will continue to capture the hearts of Melbourne listeners just as they have in Sydney.’

The shock jocks faired better in Sydney, achieving a share of 14.1 per cent and attracting a weekly audience of 696,000 Sydneysiders.

However it placed them behind overall winner, 2GB’s Ben Fordham, who has pulled almost 3 points ahead of the pair, after they have dropped from 14.7 to 14.1.

Fordham has gained 0.4 per cent to  a solid 17 per cent of the listeners, while 2GB picked up 0.7 per cent to make it to the lead.

Kyle and Jackie O have held onto a 5 per cent lead over WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda, who are at 9.1 per cent.

Meanwhile, Smoothfm has come out at 9.8 per cent.

On April 29, Kyle and Jackie O took their breakfast radio show to Melbourne in a huge multimillion-dollar expansion deal.

The move triggered the axing of Jason ‘Jase’ Hawkins and Lauren Phillips’ breakfast show.

An unapologetic Kyle said he felt indifferent to his competitors being sacked, as it ultimately came down to who was attracting the most listeners.

‘No, I don’t care. That’s why we went for Melbourne, we were like, ‘We’ve given this Jase and Lauren on KIIS FM a good run, it can’t get over fourth in the radio ratings, so we’ll take it’,’ he told news.com.au.

He added that the The Kyle and Jackie O Show was moved to Melbourne because it was a ‘market in trouble’ and their program could help regain listeners.

However, Kyle’s co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson took a different approach, adding that while she didn’t like competitors being axed it was the unfortunate reality of the business.

‘No one ever wants to move someone out of a job. I wouldn’t want that to happen to me. It’s a double edged sword, it really is,’ she said.
